Turkey opens first IRC
Turkey's first Innovation Relay Centre (IRC) has opened in Izmir, the country's third largest city. The IRC's operators have set it a number of objectives, including demonstrating to the region's small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) that technological upgrade through innovative technologies will be in their long term interest. The centre will also establish the needs and readiness of SMEs for transnational cooperation and determine where technological deficiencies lie. The IRC has been established under the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6), and is being operated by a consortium involving Ege University's science and technology centre, the Aegean region's Chamber of Industry, the Izmir Ataturk Organised Industrial Region and the Directorship for the Support and Development of SMEs.
