The Karolinska Institute has awarded a new international science prize for work in professional healthcare training to Dutch researcher Henk Schmidt for his pioneering research into medical education research. This is the first time the prize, totalling 50,000 euro, has been awarded. It is designed to stimulate research in the field of medical education, and to help improve medical teaching, training and healthcare provision in the process. Professor Schmidt has conducted research into learning at all levels, from student to medical specialist. His work has included the study of student-centred learning, problem-based learning, clinical learning skills and the acquisition of specialist knowledge on medicine. The prize will be presented in November.
