A Eureka project involving partners from Italy, Spain and Turkey has developed an environmentally automated packing system that is set to generate a 30 per cent increase in turnover for the lead partner. The packaging is intended for large items such as furniture and stone flooring. It includes an advanced visions system and uses only one recyclable packaging material. The recyclable plastic can be used as beads or compacted into boards. Other environmental benefits include a reduction in both the amount of material used and the waste generated. The scanning vision system operates in 3D and comprises two cameras, a laser and novel software. The scanner measures the width, length and height of the next item to be packed, constructs a 3D surface model of it and sends data to the packing machine controls. Robots fitting the protection material onto the package are then guided in order to provide optimum packing. The vision system also contributes to quality control by inspecting the product and the packing process.
