The European Investment Bank (EIB) is to finance a series of research and infrastructure projects in Italy with 1.6 billion euro under the European Growth Initiative, launched during Italy's EU Presidency in 2003. The laser synchrotron in Trieste will receive 60 million euro, while small and medium sized enterprises carrying out research and innovation activities will receive 100 million euro. The synchrotron loan will be used for construction. Once up and running, the free electron laser will generate rays that enable molecular and atomic microscopy, leading to greater understanding of the properties of materials during chemical reactions and in biological and pharmacological processes. The project features on the Quick Start list of priority projects selected by the European Council. Work should be completed by the end of 2009. Some 100 million euro will go to Pirelli, the tyres, cables and systems company, for investment in their research, development and innovation programme. The programme supports the development of innovative components, products and processes aimed at improving performance, increasing safety, lessening environmental impact and optimising the efficiency of the production cycle. Research priorities include innovative materials, fuel cells and environmental censors.
