The Austrian government has announced a funding envelope of 50 million euro for 2005 and 2006 for strengthening infrastructure at the country's universities. The Uni-Infrastructure III programme will provide every university with 100,000 euro for minor investments, for example in research literature and computer equipment, and the remaining 47.9 million euro will be distributed following a tendering process. 'The universities receive a fixed global budget. In addition to this they are being supported by the government [...]. Through this it will be possible for them to become more competitive and attractive research institutions in Europe,' said Education, Science and Culture Minister, Elisabeth Gehrer. All universities are invited to apply for infrastructure funding by submitting a list of needs in order of priority. Since 2001 the programme has provided universities with 74.5 million euro.
