Researchers from the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the US are to begin work on mapping the sheep genome. Scientists believe that the results could lead to an improvement in meat and fibre production, as well as to animal health. 'International collaborations like these are vital for promoting worldwide use and understanding of important scientific information,' said US Undersecretary for Research Joseph Jen on 16 May. Utah State University in the US will lead the project, and will be joined by Genesis Faraday in the UK, New Zealand's AgResearch and three Australian groups: the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation; Livestock Australia and Australian Wool Innovation.
