The European Commission has published a proposal for a Council Regulation on Community action in the field of statistics. The aim of the Regulation is to ensure the feasibility, coherence and comparability of EU statistics and to define the division of responsibility between national and EU statistical authorities with a view to attaining maximum efficiency in carrying out the statistical programme. The Regulation lays down the objectives and parties responsible for implementation of the statistical programme, the decision-making procedure, the annual EU work programmes, the bases and contents of EU statistics, the division of responsibilities, cooperation between the Commission and the European Monetary Institute and between national and EU statistical authorities, statistical dissemination and confidentiality, and the functioning of the Statistical Programme Committee and the Committee on Statistical Confidentiality.
