International scientific cooperation with countries outside the European Union has been an integral part of the EU research framework programmes since 1984. CORDIS, the EU's official online information service for research and innovation, has now launched a new web site that brings together diverse information on this area. A new 'What's New' section has been developed to highlight recent news and upcoming events of relevance to international scientific cooperation with third countries. The other parts of the site relate to the current and future framework programmes as well as to those of the past. The current framework programme (FP6) includes several activities related to international scientific cooperation with the general objective of opening up the European Research Area (ERA) to the world. The major areas of assistance are: third country participation in projects in all the thematic programmes, funding for researchers' mobility through the Marie Curie actions, and a dedicated programme for international scientific cooperation (INCO) with targeted third countries. The new site also includes information on the next framework programme, FP7, which is still at the proposal stage, awaiting approval and adoption by the European Parliament and Council. The main areas of relevance for international scientific cooperation are opening the Specific Programme on Cooperation to third country participation and supporting specific targeted actions with them, funding researchers' mobility under the People Programme, and providing input and setting research priorities for international scientific cooperation under the Capacities Programme. There are also links to archived material on international scientific cooperation activities under previous framework programmes, FP4 and FP5.
