Pressure group calls on UK to back science
UK pressure group the Campaign for Science and Engineering (CaSE) has published a New Year wishlist, calling on the British government to fulfil its desire to have the UK leading the world's biggest wealth-creating and dynamic sectors, including science. The article claims that UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and the Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown agree that, 'No part of Europe will thrive in the coming decades if it does not compete effectively in its ability to discover and apply new knowledge.' The article, published on politics.co.uk calls for the recruitment of more and better paid science teachers, incentives for industrial research to make the UK more competitive, and changes to university funding in the hope that students will realise the economic advantages of taking science degrees.
