Commission launches news service linking science and environment policy
The European Commission's Environment DG has launched a weekly news alert service entitled 'Science for Environment Policy'. The service is intended to help improve the dissemination of research results so that they are more usable for policy makers, and ultimately more fully exploited. The initiative will also play a role in communicating environmental issues to the general public. The weekly alert provides information on all areas covered by the EU's Environmental Action Programme, as well as subjects relevant to the Environment DG's policy priorities. The content will include the results of completed or on-going EU funded projects as well as other research initiatives implemented at international, national and regional levels. Articles in the first issue address the ecological advantages of recycling waste from electrical and electronic equipment, Europe's vulnerability to environmental change, reversing the decline in the number of fish in rivers, improving the risk monitoring of genetically modified plants, and the economic benefits of improved river basin management.
