New Commissioner takes responsibility for Energy and Transport
The European Commission has announced that a newly nominated Member of the Commission, Mr. Marcelino Oreja, is to take responsibility for Energy and Transport, replacing Mr. Matutes. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Oreja stated that the Energy and Transport portfolios represent two major themes in European competitivity and lie at the centre of important current debates. The implementation of the White Paper on Growth, Competitiveness and Employment, particularly with regard to trans-European networks, is of the highest priority for the European Union.
