Investment in Welsh joint ventures
The Welsh Minister for Education has announced a pot of GBP 16 million (23.35 million euro) for Welsh universities to encourage and promote collaboration. As a result, the Universities of Wales in Aberystwyth and Bangor have formed the 'Research and Enterprise Partnership' and come together in four collaborative research centres, earning them GBP 10.95 million (16 million euro). The centres are: the Centre for Catchment to Coast Research, the Centre for Integrated Rural Environment Research, the Centre for Advanced Functional Materials and Devices Research, and the Institute for Mediaeval and early Modern Studies. A further sum has been set aside for a Wales Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience, pooling research from the University of Wales at Swansea and Bangor and Cardiff University. The Minister, Jane Davidson, said: 'Both the Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience and the Research and Enterprise Partnership will place Wales at the heart of the research community in these areas. These collaborations are a demonstration of the success of the Reaching Higher approach - where we will achieve world class research collaboratively.' The development of the four Centres will include nine new Chairs and additional research staff. It is hoped the new appointments, coupled with the integration of research from the different institutions at the new Centres, will increase the international profile and research competitiveness of the institutions in Wales.
