A study by the German Institute of Economic Research has found that foreign businesses are increasing their investment in research conducted in Germany. According to the study, foreign investment rose from 11.5 billion euro in 2001 to over 12 billion euro in 2003. In addition, one in four researchers working in Germany is employed by a foreign company. While Germany is one of the more successful EU countries in attracting foreign investment, the money flowing into Germany pales in comparison to that received by the US, which sees around 26 billion euro in foreign research investment each year. The study also found that German companies substantially increased their investment in research abroad during the 1990s. The country now invests around 11 billion euro outside of Germany each year. The writers of the study predict that Germany will continue to increase its foreign investment in order to stay competitive by taking advantage of growing markets and research excellence in other countries. The internationalisation of research strengthens Germany as a location for conducting research, said Minister for Education and Culture, Annette Schavan.
