A small group of industrialists was set up last year under the chairmanship of Dr. H. Soboll, Senior Vice-President of Daimler Benz, to examine the requirements for high performance networking in Europe. The results of their investigation, "Report of the High-Performance Networking Requirements Group", was recently presented to the Commission. In the report the group suggests that the Commission should take a pro-active role in encouraging suppliers of networks and related applications to accelerate deployment. To achieve this the report proposes to support users in Europe by demonstrating real user benefits in the market. The group considers that attention should be paid to the issue of preparing potential users to exploit new and advanced services and thereby increase demand for the deployment of high-performance services. The broad objective of the EU in this area is to foster the use of high-performance networking through the following means: - By widely demonstrating the user experiences which demonstrate how to gain competitive advantage with network-distributed applications; - By encouraging the-wide spread adoption of proven best-practice techniques; - By supporting networked-distributed application experiments.
