Finland is intensifying its research links with China with the signing of technology cooperation agreements between Tekes, the Finnish National Technology Agency, and Beijing, Jiangsu Province and Shenzhen. Together with Shanghai, which has already signed a cooperation agreement with Tekes, the three regions represent China's most important areas for industry and research. The new agreements will make it easier for top Finnish researchers and companies to build relationships with their Chinese counterparts. Areas highlighted for cooperation in the agreements include information and communication technologies (ICT), energy and environmental technologies, biotechnology, health care technologies, new materials, nanotechnology, digital media, industrial design, paper and forest industry technologies and the commercialisation of technologies. Tekes has invested heavily in building links with China; it has offices in Beijing and Shanghai, and is a member of the Tsinghua University Industry Cooperation Committee. Tsinghua is one of China's top universities. Much of the Tekes website has been translated into Chinese. Tekes China also works to promote greater cooperation between the EU and China. 'Research and development work with China is important because China is investing more and more in science and technology,' commented Jaani Heinonen of Tekes Shanghai.
