Finland has announced that it is to increase its funding for research and development (R&D) by EUR60 million in 2007. A total of €1.73 billion has been earmarked in this year's budget for R&D, compared to €1.67 billion in 2006. The funds will be distributed among Finland's main funding bodies. The largest portion of the money - some €504.3 million - will go to the Finnish National Technology Agency (Tekes), while €446.4 will be shared out between the country's universities. Other beneficiaries include the Academy of Finland and the university central hospitals which will respectively receive €275.8 million and €48.7 million. Finland continues to be one of the EU's top investors in R&D. In 2005, the country's spending on research stood at 3.48% of GDP, just behind Sweden at 3.86%.
