Open consultation on carbon capture and storage
The European Commission has launched a consultation on the capture and storage of CO2 underground. The results will help to form a legislative proposal on a regulatory framework for carbon capture and storage (CCS). CCS is a potential way of reducing atmospheric emissions of carbon dioxide that result from industrial processes, and in particular the use of fossil fuels in power generation. The technology concept has already been outlined as 'an option in the portfolio of mitigation actions' by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The consultation will remain open until 16 April 2007.
