The TACIS programme, set up in December 1990, is a European Union initiative to assist economic reform and recovery in the independent States of the former Soviet Union and, since March 1994, Mongolia. In a framework of cooperation, TACIS provides grants for the provision of know-how to the new independent States and Mongolia. Working closely with its partner countries, it will have made available ECU 1,870 million to launch more than 2,000 projects by the end of 1994. The European Commission's Directorate-General for External Economic Relations(DG I), which manages TACIS, has now published an information brochure entitled "What is TACIS? Partnerships and cooperation with the new independent States". The brochure presents a detailed account of TACIS activities, including a list of priority sectors, partnership techniques and action programmes. Examples of projects are provided throughout.
