The European Commission has raised no objections to an aid scheme submitted by the Government of Catalonia relating to the recycling and reuse of waste materials. The scheme is designed to reinforce recycling activities, make better use of natural resources and improve waste management. The present EU Regulation sets out the conditions covering measures to stimulate companies to use recycled materials as a primary source, as an energy source or as a combustible in industrial processes. Non-repayable grants are available to existing companies which invest in projects permitting them to use waste and recycled materials in their production processes, or to prepare waste in such a way that it can be reused. Investment in any new production capacity is excluded from a grant, and projects should contribute significantly to the objectives of the programme. The annual budget will be ECU 3.15 million for 1994-97. The maximum amount that each recipient can obtain under the scheme is ECU 315,000 for investments, and ECU 63,000 for studies and pilot programmes. It is expected that up to 50 recipients a year will benefit from the scheme.
