Swansea University tops UK funding league
Swansea University has attracted more public and private sector funding for collaborative research with industry than any other university in the UK, according to a new survey. The Welsh university made it to the top spot by bringing in more than €67 million in funding for research, €11.4 million more than Cambridge University which came in second place. The Higher Education-Business and Community Interaction (HE-BCI) survey, published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, measures the value of public and business funding that universities attract from industry. The key findings of the report show that the UK's higher education institutions are building and strengthening links with industry, which in turn is leading to more effective exploitation of commercial research and intellectual property. It also highlights the fundamental role that higher education plays in the economy of a country. 'We pride ourselves on the strength of our relationships with industry, and these figures demonstrate that we are enjoying considerable success,' said Professor Richard Davies, Vice-chancellor of Swansea University. The report put Swansea University ahead of Cambridge and Manchester University, which obtained €56.8 million and €49.3 million respectively from industry.
