A Czech technology platform (CTP) in the field of mechanical engineering could be approved for a February 2008 start, the Czech Liaison Office for Research and Development, Czelo, reports. Although still under discussion, the technology platform already has four universities and their research centres, two research institutes, as well as other organisations and companies on board and considering participation. The main aim of the CTP would be the development of a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA), defining a strategy for research and development (R&D) in the field of mechanical engineering. The strategy would apply to the Czech Republic as well as the European Research Area. Its overall aim would be to improve the competitiveness of European industry in the face of competition from the Far East. The CTP would also seek to cooperate with the manufacturing European Technology Platform, ManuFuture, in a bid to horizontally integrate, coordinate and synchronise R&D efforts in EU Member States. In this way the Czech Republic could also obtain a seat on the board of the High-level Group of the ETP. 'A meeting for the establishment of the Czech technology Platform should take place at the end of September and the main actors should sign the declaration establishing the platform then,' Ms Tána Perglová, a coordinator at Czelo ,told CORDIS News.
