Protecting personal data and privacy from digital telecommunications networks
An amended proposal for a European Parliament and Council Directive has been published concerning the protection of personal data and privacy in the context of digital telecommunications networks, in particular the integrated services digital network (ISDN), and digital mobile networks. The Directive provides for the harmonization of the provisions required to ensure an equivalent level of protection of personal data and privacy in the Member States and to provide for the free movement of telecommunications equipment and services in the Community. The modified Directive takes account of the fact that divergent legal, regulatory and technical provisions have now been adopted by several Member States. These divergent provisions necessitate further harmonization at Community level.
