At its 284th plenary session of 27 February 1991, the Economic and Social Committee adopted unanimously an Opinion regarding a proposal for a Council Decision establishing the second phase of the TEDIS programme (Trade Electronic Data Interchange Systems). The interim report submitted by the Commission concludes that TEDIS has set a process in motion which has to be carried through to its conclusion to ensure complete success. The ESC endorses this assessment in full and therefore supports the proposal, being very conscious of the strategic importance of Electronic Data Interchange and considering that TEDIS is the principle Community programme aimed at optimizing EDI benefits for the Internal Market. The Commissions search for integrative Community-wide solutions is strongly endorsed. Specific comment covers sectoral projects, extension of telecommunications network infrastructures, legal aspects, security, standards, training, dissemination of information, industrial awareness, social repercussions.
