European Community response to HIV/AIDS epidemic
In the framework of the Community's "Europe against AIDS" programme, the European Commission has published the preliminary version of a report entitled "A world with HIV/AIDS: The European Community response, 1994". The efforts within Europe, undertaken under the "Europe against AIDS" programme, have two key priorities: - The collection of data (epidemiology and the impact of preventive measures); - The implementation of public health measures (prevention, information, health education and social support including combating discrimination). The strategic priorities for HIV/AIDS action in developing countries are: - Minimizing the spread of the epidemic while preventing discrimination and exclusion; - Enabling the health sector to cope with the additional burden caused by the epidemic; - Reducing the consequences of the epidemic on social and economic development; - Increasing scientific understanding of the epidemic. The European Community has already devoted more than ECU 250 million to programmes and operational projects in the fields of public health, and HIV/AIDS research and development.
