With the handing over of the Presidency of the European Union from Slovenia to France on 1 July, CORDIS, the Community Research and Development Information Service, has launched a new internet portal giving access to information on research and development (R&D) activities under the French Presidency. The new service lays out the French priorities in the field of R&D for the six months to come: In line with its predecessors, the French Council Presidency puts an emphasis on the advancement of the European Research Area (ERA), as 'the ERA should be capable of providing solutions to a series of major challenges, which are economic, social and environmental (climate change; energy and food security; ageing), scientific and technological (fundamental research).' In addition, France intends to further promote the EU's position as one of the major players in space research and make progress on a Community patent. A news section will provide information on the latest developments in European research policy throughout the French Presidency, while an events section gives an overview of upcoming science-related conferences and meetings in France as well as Brussels. France will be at the helm of the EU until the end of December 2008 and will be followed by the Czech Republic in the first half of 2009 with Sweden completing the trio in the second half of 2009. The CORDIS French Presidency service was developed by CORDIS in cooperation with the relevant French authorities and is available in English and French.
