In October 1991, the European Commission, DG XII, initiated the establishment of a Marine Habitat and Wildlife Sanctuary in Saudi Arabia to monitor the effects of the Gulf War on the marine environment in the area. The results of this endeavour are now published in "The status of coastal and marine habitats two years after the Gulf War oil spill". The publication presents the first results of the research work of a joint team of Saudi Arabian and European scientists who continuously surveyed and monitored the ecological effects of the war over a period of more than two years.
