On 7-8 July 1994 the European Commission held a meeting in Bratislava to discuss future scientific and technological cooperation with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The Commission asked each of the participating countries to identify its priority areas of action for future cooperation under the Community's Fourth Framework Programme. In Latvia, only 0.35% of GNP was spent on science projects in 1993 and participation in EU programmes is weak. Priorities in science are not clearly defined but the Latvian Council of Science would like to devote more attention to: - Local resources; - Social and humanities sciences; - Medicine and health protection.
