The ENVIRONMENT programme (1990-1994) of the European Commission, DG XII, has published a report on "Environmental UV radiation: Causes, effects, consequences". Aimed at scientists, policy-makers and educators, the report explains the mechanisms and impact of ozone depletion, particularly the effects of UV radiation. It describes how ozone depletion is being countered both by international cooperation by means of legislation and by research aimed at increasing our understanding of the causes and potential impact of our efforts. The following issues are examined: - Ozone layer depletion; - UV radiation; - Predicting the future; - The effect of increased solar UV radiation on biological systems; - Research programmes; - Policy.
