Information strategy for the European Foundation
The European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions seeks expert information-science advice and assistance in the development, refinement and implementation of its information strategy. The objective of this strategy is to: - Support research projects and studies by the Foundation, and the dissemination of knowledge that will help improve conditions for people who live and work in Europe; - Enable the Foundation to respond constructively, effectively and rapidly to enquiries about ways to improve living and working conditions; - Facilitate communication between researchers, the social partners and national administrations to further the Foundation's existing programmes of work and planned initiatives. At present the Foundation makes balanced use of diverse communications media: - There is a substantial publishing programme in the European Union's official languages, including multi-volume monographs of authority, serials, and reports; - Informal networks that facilitate the exchange of information relating to research in progress and issues that merit study are in place; - Full text and structured databases are already in use, and their scope is being extended in the fields of European employment law and practice, health and safety, and new forms of work; - Hypertext versions of databases are also in place and being developed; - Work is advancing on a multilingual meta-thesaurus to enrich the analysis of information sources and the retrieval of useful texts and records; - Well-tried procedures facilitate the application of the Standardized General Mark-up Language for published, database and hypertext versions of the Foundation's inputs and outputs and the interchange of documents, textual information and data in line with sound open systems practice, protocols and appropriate international and European standards.
