Tender for a study for ensuring safe mobility for the elderly in Europe
The European Commission has issued a tender for a study on 'the ageing population: how to ensure safe mobility for the elderly in Europe'. Road design standards and criteria are currently still based on a youthful society. New technology in vehicles and the road infrastructure is developing rapidly. As these technologies become more readily available, however, their suitability for use by the elderly needs to be assessed. There are suggestions that the mobility of older people is strongly related to functionality, not necessarily to age or health status. The primary purpose of the study is to assess older people's ability to use the road system based on their functionality rather than age and health criteria, and to define the relationship between health status and functionality. A second goal of the study is to evaluate whether current standards and criteria are still suitable for an ageing population. For further information, please contact: European Commission rue Demot 24 Attn: Maria Cristina Marolda 1040 Brussels Belgium E-mail: maria-cristina.marolda@ec.europa.eu To see the full details of the call, please consult: OJ No S114 of 15 June 2010(opens in new window)
