The European Commission has published a call for proposals for projects on prevention and preparedness under the EU Civil Protection Financial Instrument. The 2011 call for project proposals in civil protection has two separate sections, each with specific objectives and budget: prevention projects and preparedness projects. EU Member States are increasingly facing a wide range of disasters. One way to protect the EU from the effects of disasters is to enhance prevention and preparedness in European civil protection. Proposals in this area can be submitted for one or more of the following general objectives. - developing knowledge-based disaster prevention policies (actions developing hazard identification and risk modeling) in particular on the physical and economic impact; - implementing loss prevention measures (actions on awareness-raising of the general public on disaster prevention, action drawing lessons from the past disasters to look at potential improvements to disaster prevention); - improving the effectiveness of existing policy and financial instruments with regards to disaster prevention (actions to improve the effectiveness of financial instruments supporting disaster prevention, actions assessing the costs and benefits of risk prevention measures). A combination of different objectives is also possible. Preparedness is essential in civil protection and marine pollution - being well prepared can save lives and reduce the impact of disasters. Proposals in this area should be aimed at reinforcing cooperation in the framework of the EU Mechanism for Civil Protection. Preparedness objectives under this call include: - improve the effectiveness of emergency response by enhancing the preparedness and awareness of civil protection professionals and volunteers; - support and complement the efforts of the participating countries for the protection of citizens, environment and property in the event of natural and manmade disasters; - facilitate reinforced cooperation between the participating states in preparedness for civil protection and marine pollution. To see the official call announcement in the Official Journal of the European Union please consult: OJ No C 49 of 16 February 2011(opens in new window)
