A Resolution of the European Parliament of 22 February 1991 on the footwear industry, having regard, inter alia, to the Commission Communication on "the Community footwear industry (a Community approach to ease adjustments to the Single Market)" (SEC(90) 443 of 9.3.1990) and to the difficulties experienced by the Community footwear industry characterized by a fall in production, employment and exports, emphasises the importance of technological innovation. Productivity must be improved by promoting areas of: research and technological development; efficiency of production, management and marketing; vocational and management training schemes; forms of association for production, provision of services and purchasing. Parliament stresses the importance of strengthening Community programmes supporting such measures and calls on the Commission to ensure the industry can benefit from funds available in the context of the BRITE/EURAM, VALUE, SPRINT, COMETT II/EUROTECNET, CRAFT and FORCE programmes.
