Call for tenders for a safety management system definition and implementation within the European Global Navigation Satellite System
The European Commission has published a call for tenders for a safety management system (SMS) definition and implementation within the European Global Navigation Satellite System (EGNSS). The EGNSS programmes develop and operate satellite navigation systems that provide safety-of-life services to their users. The project is named after the famous Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei. This SMS must be tailored to interface with existing SMSs of external organisations whilst able to be operated within the context of the European Commission. The importance of the safety management of the EGNSS programmes is well-recognised at the highest levels of the Commission. It has therefore been recommended to set up a formalised SMS. In the interim a number of recommendations have been implemented to set up the core elements of an SMS. It is expected therefore that the procedures already followed, even if not formally adopted, will facilitate the introduction of the formal SMS since the key project staff are already aware of their safety responsibilities, albeit without a formal basis. To see the official call announcement, please consult: OJ No S 111 of 10 June 2011(opens in new window)
