The European Commission has published a call for tenders for a literature review on the potential climate change effects on drinking water resources across the EU and the identification of priorities among different types of drinking water supplies. The work foreseen under the call will consist of four areas, ranging from identifying, collecting and reviewing the relevant information to the dissemination of results. The first part of the work will be a literature review of the existing relevant information of the operating and natural recharge mechanisms under changing climate conditions of water resources providing for public drinking water supply (groundwaters, surface waters, karstic waters, riverbed and riverbank-filtered waters) across the EU. The next stage will see the drafting of a methodology on the assessment and management of potential impacts of climate change on existing and prospective drinking water resources. Specific attention will be paid to drinking water protected areas in river basin management, to be further discussed under the Water Framework Directive common implementation strategy. In the third stage, it will be necessary to draw up possible elements for inclusion in an action plan for the upcoming years in Europe that guarantees that drinking water supplies are planned and maintained in a way that their adaptation to climate change is ensured. The fourth part of the work will be the provision of continuous information to Member States and organisations engaged in the topic on the assessment of climate change processes potentially threatening public water supply. To see the official call announcement, please consult: OJ No S 115 of 17 June 2011(opens in new window)
