The European Commission, DG XII, in collaboration with specialized institutions in the Member States and international organizations, has produced "The European report on science and technology indicators 1994". The report is the first of a series of Commission studies on science and technology in general. It focuses on the S&T performance of the European Union Member States over the period 1980-1993, using a wide spectrum of indicators. It also contains information on the S&T performance of the EFTA countries and a number of the Central and East European countries. Finally, in order to position the EU and its individual Member States in the wider international environment, it contains international comparisons with the world's 50 most technically advanced nations. In particular, the following issues are examined: - European science and technology in the world; - Industrial research and development and competitiveness; - European diversity, convergence and cohesion; - R&D cooperation in Europe; - The European Union as a world partner; - European attitudes towards science and technology.
