The European Commission has published a Directive taking account of technical progress on the contained use of genetically modified micro-organisms (GMOs) as set out in Council Directive 90/219/EEC. The Commission Directive revises the classification of GMOs in light of the experience gained with their use as well as the technical progress in general in the field of biotechnology. Annex II of the Directive contains the criteria for classifying modified micro-organisms. Member States are obliged to comply with the Directive by 30 April 1995.
