The 1989 International Agreement on jute and jute products entered into force provisionally on 12 April 1991 following a decision by the United Nations conference meeting in Geneva on 12 April 1991 pursuant to article 40 (3) of that Agreement. Objectives of the Agreement relate to both exporting and importing members of the International Jute Organization (IJO). Inter alia, provision is made for the International Jute Council to identify, arrange for the implementation of, and monitor certain RTD projects in this field.
