CORDIS Express: Space sector supports European independence
European independence and security are not just about energy and defence policies. There is another less obvious sector that is highly involved in keeping us safe - the space sector! The space industry enables the systems and services that keep our security chiefs informed and preserve our autonomy. Telecommunications, navigation and Earth observation also provide us with strategically important knowledge underpinning the EU's external relations in areas such as development-assistance and humanitarian aid. The space industry has changed dramatically in recent years - it's no longer the sole preserve of a few powerful nations but a global business. As such, the European space industry is facing increasing competition from new emerging space powers such as China and India. If we are to maintain our independence and continue to develop informed external policies, a thriving space industry is necessary. That's one of the reasons why EU space research is identified by Horizon 2020 as one of Europe's 'key industrial technologies'. Out of the EUR 80 billion Euro dedicated to Horizon 2020, EUR 1.7 billion is invested in space research and innovation. Working under the theme 'Prepare for the increasing role of space in the future and reap the benefits of space now!', research projects will help to strengthen the European space industry's position at global level. This edition of CORDIS Express takes a look at some of the latest news and recent and ongoing projects in this field.
