A financing agreement was signed on 31 January 1995 by Vice-President Mr. Manuel Marin, on behalf of the European Commission, and Singapore Ambassador Mary Seet-Cheng, the Chairwoman of the ASEAN Brussels Committee. The agreement concerned the second phase of the EC-ASEAN COGEN programme. The programme aims at transferring European technology to ASEAN countries in the field of energy production from wood wastes and agro-residues. The programme, which was requested by the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology, constitutes a concrete illustration of the Commission's new strategy towards Asia in the field of economic cooperation. By increasing mutual awareness between European industrialists and ASEAN agro-industries, it will ultimately contribute to the energy supply of ASEAN countries and to the improvement of the environment. The programme will comprise demonstrations of modern, efficient and environmentally friendly European technology. Its total cost is estimated at EC 20 million, of which the EC contribution will be ECU 5 million. The Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok will be responsible for its implementation.
