Selection of the official design on 10 March 1995 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the United Kingdom marked the launch of the 1995 European Union Contest for Young Scientists. The winning design was created by Tony Pilkington, aged 16, of the Newcastle Art College, who won the "Art for Science" competition sponsored by the Human Capital and Mobility programme of the European Commission (DG XII). The winner was selected by a jury headed by Dr. Gordon Adam MEP, Vice-President of the European Parliament's Energy, Research and Technology Committee. The design, which represents the diversity and vibrancy of the Young Scientists Contest, will be featured on all contest literature and publicity. This year, the finals will be held in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom, on 11-13 September 1995.
