The European Commission has given an opinion on the planned construction of the Baltic Sea motorway A 20, near Mecklenberg-Western Pomerania. The project is part of the trans-European road network. According to route plans, the motorway is to cross two valleys, designated by Germany as special protection areas under Directive 79/409/EEC on the conservation of wild birds. The protection areas concerned are particularly rich in species and include marshes and bogs, i.e. priority habitat types according to Directive 92/43/EEC on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora (Habitat Directive). In its opinion, the Commission said that the negative implications for the special bird protection area "Valley of Recknitz and Trebel" are justified in view of public interest considerations, such as the fact that the A 20 in an integrated part of the trans-European road network.
