New solution for certification of digital competences in primary and secondary schools

In 2013, the EC declared digital competence as one of the eight key competences that any young person must acquire before completing compulsory education in order to enter the labour market without risk of exclusion. Although a European framework for Digital Competence has been published (DigComp 2.1), most educational institutions have not applied it because there is no methodology with standards and indicators to facilitate the evaluation and accreditation of digital competence of students.

This is where this new educational experience came into play. Fifteen partners from nine EU countries gathered within the CRISS project (Demonstration of a scalable and cost-effective cloud-based digital learning infrastructure through the Certification of digital competences in primary and secondary schools) in order to contribute to the modernization of the educational and training system towards the adoption of new cloud-based teaching methodologies and services that enable the acquisition of digital competences in primary and secondary schools in Europe. The project consortium is a multi-national consortium composed of 15 partners from 9 countries including research institutions and universities, public institutions and authorities and private software companies. The overall objective of CRISS (1/1/2017 – 31/12/2019) was to develop and pilot, with more than 490 schools including 25,400 students and 2,290 teachers around Europe, a flexible, scalable and cost-effective cloud-based digital learning ecosystem to deliver user-driven and adaptive technological solutions that allow the guided acquisition, evaluation and certification of digital competences in primary and secondary education. The pilot was implemented within European schools during the school year 2018/2019. CRISS and its commitment to the future Digital competence is part of today's society and it is well known that the labour market is increasingly demanding qualified workers with digital and technological skills. CRISS is committed to empowering the skills of the 21st century in education, so that both teachers and students are prepared to face the future. Thanks to participation of many in this educational experience, CRISS partners designed and tested a technological platform that implements a methodological framework for the acquisition, evaluation and certification of digital competences, and that aspires to become a common reference in all educational institutions in Europe. It is expected that this will enable students to demonstrate their knowledge in the future, which will make it easier for them to enter university or the labour market. On the other hand, the educational institutions will be better prepared to offer the most innovative training possible to their students. In November 2019, CRISS results will be presented within the CRISS Symposium in Heraklion, Crete, Greece.
