The European Commission has authorized State aid valued at ECU 60.9 million over five years to fund a Portuguese scheme to minimize the environmental damage inflicted by heavy goods vehicles.

The scheme will encourage a reduction in the number of lorries in circulation and adaptation of the existing fleet to respect environmental restrictions on noise pollution and the emission of "dirty" fuels. It will run from 1995 to 1999.
