Global5G.org: Unlocking the value of 5G for vertical industries in Europe
The European Union has made it a strategic priority to establish 5G leadership across a growing number of vertical industries. This is where the Global5G.org Coordination and Support Action (global5g.5g-ppp.eu) comes into play by making major strides in engaging broadly across the European vertical industries, creating networks, connecting key players with each other, organising forums for rich interchange of technical viewpoints and strategies. The Verticals Cartography online tool developed by Trust-IT based on the AALTO Blueprint has become a major 5G PPP showcase of 5G trials and pilots, highlighting 5G functionalities defined by ITU over phase 2 and now phase 3 projects with a high number of viewers from around the globe. A complementary mapping tool developed by partner inno-tsd and destined for the EU 5G Observatory helps the user to analyse the 5G readiness of Europe across the continent. A suite of webinars hosted by Global5G.org partners Trust-IT and IDC feature respected experts from a wide range of vertical industries, sharing the latest insights through interactive discussions to participants. Recordings and takeaways are available online. Similarly, a set of deliverables focused on vertical industry 5G requirements and current market opportunities and partnerships authored by partners IDC and Trust-IT offered deep analysis targeted both at IT professionals and managers tracking the evolution of 5G markets today. A complementary set of international benchmarks created by partner inno-tsd offered insights into 5G vertical activities in specific countries such as the United States, China, and Japan. A special report on 5G energy efficiency by partner inno-tsd offered a deep dive into a topic of crucial importance today. Several White Papers on topics ranging from Small Cells deployment to 5G demonstrations and Business Models to 5G automotive deployment feasibility were produced and made permanently available online. Crucial Steps towards 5G Standardisation for Vertical Industries Another crucial aspect of 5G in European vertical industries is the successful participation in 5G standardisation activities, which drive both innovation and take-up by organisations. Coordinator Trust-IT realised early on that for Europe to achieve 5G leadership it must maintain a strong position within standardisation efforts, particularly in major Standards Organisations such as the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), ETSI, ISO, and CENELEC. To this end, partner Trust-IT developed the online Standards Tracker, whose purpose is to help vertical industries in navigating the thickets of 5G standards processes and keeping up to date with the latest developments. In addition, Trust-IT co-organised a ground-breaking series of 5G Vertical User Workshops in Brussels and Rome bringing together a large cross-section of global vertical industries to interact and seek commonalities in their requirements for 5G. This on-going workshop series is organised by a sub-set of 3GPP Market Representation Partners: 5G Infrastructure Association, 5G Automotive Association, 5G Alliance for Connected and Automated Industry and Public Safety Communication Europe. On top of this, Global5G.org has also worked with StandICT.eu on 5G standardisation for digital health and on assessing the impacts of H2020 funding through Open Calls from both a policy and industry perspective. Towards FULL5G Through the curation of its website, Global5G.org has ensured its heritage is taken forward in phase 3 of the 5G PPP. Full migration of the website to the FULL5G Coordination and Support Action (www.5g-ppp.eu) means all project assets will live on, guaranteeing the sustainability of the Global5G.org online tools: Verticals Cartography, Standards Tracker, Mapping Tool and new developments of the KPI Performance assessment. These are all key to proving the impacts and RoI for Europe’s public private partnership on 5G.
