The European Commission has approved an aid package for four Italian companies participating in the EUREKA - PROMETHEUS research project. PROMETHEUS is a research programme headed by car manufacturers from six European countries. The participants are the electronics industry and suppliers, universities and research institutes, traffic engineers and authorities. The ultimate aims of the projects are far-reaching and will define the possible future of road traffic. The aim is to create integrated traffic systems composed of a road-integrated control network and intelligent vehicles capable of interacting electronically both between themselves and with the road-integrated device. It will also allow drivers to act as deciders and supervisors of movement, involving a far lower expenditure of mental and physical energy than at present. The total aid that the Italian authorities intend to award to the Italian participation in the second phase of the PROMETHEUS research project in the form of a grant amounts to Lit 7,287.7 million, which is about 34% of the total eligible cost (Lit 21,336 million).
