Following the recent implementation of the LEONARDO DA VINCI programme by the Commission, Mrs. Edith Cresson, the Commissioner responsible for science, research and development, and education and training, attended the launch meeting of the programme in Italy on 18 May 1995. The launch of the LEONARDO DA VINCI programme in Italy coincides with the growing debate on the future of Italian education and training, and, as in other European countries, on possible ways to address the unemployment situation. The objectives of LEONARDO DA VINCI are to: - Improve the quality of vocational training in Europe; - Encourage exchanges and placements; - Achieve a better understanding of vocational training and identification of priorities; - Encourage adaptation to the information society.
