The European Commission, DG XI, has published a call for proposals for a study on quantitative assessment of the different emergency feedwater system (EFWS) designs of modern Western pressurized water reactors (PWRs). In December 1992, the Commission's Advisory Group on Reactor Safety (RSWG) entrusted a task force to carry out a comparison of safety systems of different current generation pressurized water reactors (PWRs) in Europe. A preliminary objective was the comparison, on a qualitative basis, of one of the most demanded safeguards systems, the emergency/auxiliary feedwater system, of three different designs. This objective was met and the final report was issued in June 1994. In order to complement this, the RSWG proposed that this qualitative study be followed by a probabilistic risk assessment (PSA) of the failure of this system, so that a more quantitative comparison can be established. The aim of the study is to highlight strengths and weaknesses of each design on a quantitative PSA basis and to cover the following segments: - Analysis of the reliability of concerned fluid systems; - Simplified analysis of power and control logic; - Simplified post-accident heat-removal analysis; - Quantification of the reliability of the decay heat-removal capacity of the three designs following a maximum of three pre-defined initiating events, the minimum safe performance criteria being used; - Analysis of the results, including some limited sensitivity studies, and drafting of the final report.
