Webinars on high-performance computing to benefit research and industry in Europe and Latin America An EU-backed project has organised a series of webinars about high-performance computing (HPC) systems and tools targeting researchers, innovators and other relevant audiences in Europe and Latin America. To compete on the global stage, it is essential for all regions to strongly invest in HPC in order to maximise its wide-ranging benefits. This can only be done through coordination and capacity sharing. One such synergy involves the European and Latin American research and industrial communities, with a focus on HPC applications and infrastructure implementation. The EU-funded RISC2 project is promoting the exchange of HPC best practices. In addition, it seeks to boost Latin American HPC and to encourage interaction between researchers and innovators in both regions who have access to knowledge and tools for developing and using HPC-based services. To do so, it has brought together eight key European HPC actors with the leading stakeholders from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Uruguay. Facilitating training and access to HPC infrastructures and tools RISC2 has launched a free HPC webinar series to present cutting-edge techniques and tools for installing and maintaining HPC hardware and software infrastructures. “In RISC2, we are already making good progress in sharing HPC experience and knowledge between Latin America and the EU,” comments Fabrizio Gagliardi, senior strategy advisor at project coordinator Barcelona Supercomputing Center, in a news item posted on ‘HPCwire’. “These webinars are a way to disseminate our collective knowledge and skills on both sides of the Atlantic.” Each webinar is around 30-40 minutes, followed by a moderated discussion with the audience that lasts up to 15 minutes. Registration is required for each session. The speakers and moderators are global HPC experts. All recordings and related materials are available on the RISC2 website. The first webinar ‘Getting Scientific Software Installed: From EasyBuild to EESSI’ was held on 24 August. Three more webinars have already been scheduled between September and December: ‘Interactive High-Performance Computing with JupyterLab’ (21 September), ‘Application Benchmarking with JUBE: Lessons Learned’ (19 October), and ‘HPC system and job monitoring with LLview’ (7 December). More webinars are foreseen in 2023. RISC2 (A network for supporting the coordination of High-Performance Computing research between Europe and Latin America) is establishing a network so that Europe and Latin America are better able to coordinate HPC research between them. It will deliver a long-term coordinated policy and concrete roadmap. The project ends in June 2023.
