The first call for proposals for the specific programme for research and technological development, including demonstration, in the field of agriculture and fisheries (including agro-industry, food technologies forestry, aquaculture and rural development) (FAIR) (1994-1998) was published on 15 December 1994. The results of the evaluation of the first call for proposals are now available. A total of 937 proposals were received. These proposals were evaluated by 58 individual expert groups composed of 276 invited experts. Of the 937 proposals received, all were eligible for evaluation, indicating the high quality of proposals presented. As in previous programmes, the Commission examines all good proposals with a view to selecting the shortlist. In this call, 120 projects were rated A+ or A of which 25 were rated A+. Funding requested by all A or A+ proposals amounts to ECU 148 million. There were 304 B or B+ proposals of which 81 were allocated B+. Funding requested by all B or B+ proposals amounts to ECU 361 million. The total amount of EC funding available for this call amounts to ECU 100 million. This first call for proposals for the FAIR programme covered all areas of the programme except Area 2 (scaling-up and processing methodologies) and Areas 3.3 (advanced and optimized technologies and processes) and 3.4 (generic food science). Also omitted were demonstration activities for Areas 1 (integrated production and processing chains), 2 (scaling-up and processing methodologies) and 3 (generic science and advanced technologies for nutritious foods).
