Competitiveness and cohesion trends in the regions
The European Commission, DG XVI, has published a report entitled "Competitiveness and cohesion trends in the regions". The report is the fifth in a series of reports on the social and economic situation and development of the regions in the EU. It updates the information contained in preceding reports and provides further analysis on matters relating to regional policy. The report contains 11 chapters divided into four main parts: - Part A of the report covers the main regional trends and changes which have occurred over the last decade with regard to output, productivity, employment, unemployment and demography; - Part B examines some of the factors underlying the disparities between regions in the EU, including the role of technical research and development; - Part C gives an update of the current situation in problem regions which were eligible for EU assistance during the 1989 to 1993 period and examines EU regional policy from 1994 onwards in the light of the recent changes which have taken place in the Member States; - Part D of the report covers other European Union policies in the field of economic and monetary intervention and with regard to the issue of enlargement.
